The star of the comic; a short young man who aspires to become Santa Claus. An adept inventor who has begun to incorporate alien technology into his designs. Currently a biochem major at Edona College. Dating Nikki. Fun Fact: His middle initials spell “pew”, a smell often associated with mad science.

Louis’s own charcter makes a cameo appearance today, and she has quite accurately captured the reactions of the cast! Be sure to check out her other artwork here!

Today’s fan art (and the art to follow for the next few weeks) is brought to you once more by Louis! If you recall, Louis was the one who brought you this comic, as well as some fan art over the summer. She has kindly agreed to provide you with some more of her art over the next month. Be sure to check out her other artwork here!

Ref: Plot Bunny
The plot bunnies return, in the form of the main cast! Silly plot bunnies, dancing around my head with all the stories I want to write but don’t have time for. This comic pokes a bit of fun at my current situation: I love student teaching, but it is VERY TIME CONSUMING, meaning the comic takes a hit.
Also, I don’t think it’s ever been established in canon that Percy likes to toss tennis balls absentmindedly, although it has been seen in a few sketches. I shall have to include that sometime.

AH! So that bit about Matt Smith dressed as David Tennant DID have a point!
Tried to introduce some perspective for this comic. Panel one turned out better than past experiments, but I still have a ways to go. However, the second improvement to the comic turned out FANTASTIC! I got some comic-based fonts from BlamBot, and I think they look beautiful! They beat the overused Comic Sans, anyway.
The comment about the screwdriver in panel 4 is a bit of a jab at Doctor Who. The Fifth Doctor went “hands-free” because the producers felt that the sonic screwdriver was becoming a cure-all, and it did not return until very shortly before the Seventh Doctor’s regeneration. From the Ninth Doctor on, it has been the most-used item on the show and has far more capabilities than before. I love the sonic screwdriver, but it has become way too overused in my opinion.

In case you were wondering (particularly those of you unfamiliar with Doctor Who, Matt Smith is dressed as the Tenth Doctor, played by David Tennant. This was quite tricky for me, because in addition to a character design more complex than my usual, I had to draw Matt Smith’s facial structure with David Tennant’s appearance, as this Matt Smith was still Matt Smith back then. It wasn’t easy. I did enjoy switching the screwdrivers, as the Tenth Doctor used a different design.
The reason for this is because Jorocks would have moved in back in 2009, which was before the Tenth Doctor regenerated into the Eleventh Doctor (the regeneration was on Jan. 1, 2010). Even though our Matt wasn’t quite as obsessed with Doctor Who as he is now, he still was obsessive enough to have David Tennant’s outfit and screwdriver. (Incidentally, I saw the actual outfits worn by both the Tenth and Eleventh Doctors when I was in Cardiff.)
I used Rich Morris’s drawings from his fan comic The Ten Doctors as a reference to draw Matt as Ten. His is an absolutely brilliant fan fic, both in story and art, that you should definitely take the time to read if you like Doctor Who (and that’s coming from someone who typically dislikes fan fic as a rule).

Ref: Sixth Doctor | Eleventh Doctor | Doctor Who
I am pretty sure there is a law saying that if you are going to make any reference to Doctor Who, the “Doctor who?” joke must be said. If there isn’t such a law, there should be. Write to your Congressman today! (And yes, I am aware that Doctor Who is British. Write to your Congressman anyway!)
Anyway, now that Matt Smith has been revealed to merely share the same name and likeness with the show, ON WITH THE PARODY!

People have often assumed that Percy was based off of Tedd from Dan Shive’s El Goonish Shive. While I am a fan of EGS, having read it since the Painted Black arc in 2003 (incidentally, it was the first webcomic I started reading), I had the design and character for Percy figured out long before I ever laid eyes on Tedd. So no, Percy is not based off of Tedd, they just happen to both be glasses-wearing, semi-long-haired, somewhat stereotypical young mad scientists.
This comic is actually lovingly taken from EGS’s very first comic (please don’t kill me Dan!). I edited Elliot out and replaced a generic picture of Percy from the Welcome to Greenpath arc. I left all of Tedd’s lines the same and made Percy work around them. As for whose mad science is actually cooler, my vote has to go with Tedd, but I would be totally flattered if you choose Percy!
