Ambition
Flashback Refs: Chris | Nikki | Jorocks
It’s not often I get to reference a comic from way back in 2009 as well as one from the more recent 2012! On the note of years, I actually remembered to change the copyright, even though technically I drew this in 2012. Happy New Year, all!
Couple of notes here. The character in Panel 3 right next to Percy is, of course, Matt Smith. Since that one actor that shares his name changed costume for the most recent Doctor Who Christmas special, Matt of course felt the need to change his as well. He’s done this before. He naturally would be curious about how Percy plans to deliver ALL of the presents, as it likely involves time travel. Sally (Nikki’s roommate) at the other end has no idea that Percy wants to be Santa, so you can imagine her confusion.
I believe I’ve mentioned several times, especially on Twitter, that I dislike drawing sitting people. And I also don’t like drawing crowded panels. So what did I do for Panel 3? Yeah… That panel took me about as much time as the other three panels combined. While not perfect, this version satisfied me much more than the other versions.

From Russia With Love
I realize the last story arc consisted of all of three strips, guest art, and a splash, but hey, when you have a once-a-week comic and Christmas is a short season, what do you expect? We shall ring in the New Year with a brand new story arc, one that may carry Spoofy Randomness all the way to its fourth birthday in August! I’m really looking forward to this! It will have the scale of Tornado (but much more light-hearted), while maintaining the humor in Returning to our Roots that is better suited to the weekly format.
I really enjoyed drawing Jorocks on this page; I even researched Russian styles to draw that. Also, you thought I was kidding about that New Years’ Resolution to draw more John. MWAHAHA!
Incidentally, this is the first comic that has actually updated ON TIME in a long time. That shall continue!

Busted
John Whitebucket remains one of my favorite characters. One of my New Years’ resolutions is to draw more strips with John in them.
Finally feeling like we’re back on track in terms of art quality. Getting used to a new computer can be a little difficult at times, but I think we’re golden now. There may be a few more tweaks in the future, but nothing as jarring as the last few weeks.

Fun fact about this particular image: it was missing in the archive until May 2023. It was one of the last things published to ComicGenesis and didn’t make the move.
And yes, it makes me happy that I can spell “Spoofy Randomness” with the periodic table.

Thanksgiving
Been a while since I actually posted an update on the site itself (oops), but if you’ve been following the Facebook or Twitter, you know that my computer is running VERY SLOWLY, making art programs virtually impossible to use. Those of you who have been around a while will recall that this isn’t my first computer issue; I’ve been nursing this thing for a couple years, trying to squeeze all the life I can out of it. I decided to hold out until Black Friday to hopefully nab an iMac for at least a little cheaper. Once I get that running, I hope to return in time to make some holiday-themed comics, as well as completing those sketches! For now, have a great Thanksgiving! This is a sketch I drew on my whiteboard for my students.
